International News: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics to John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis "for their discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunneling and energy quantization in electric circuits." Their names were announced on Tuesday. The three will receive the prize at a ceremony on December 10.
"This year's Nobel Prize in Physics has provided opportunities for the development of the next generation of quantum technologies, including quantum cryptography, quantum computers, and quantum sensors," the Nobel Prize Committee said on Tuesday. All three winners are from the United States. The Nobel Prize in Physics is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and includes a total prize money of 11 million Swedish crowns, or $1.2 million, which is often shared among multiple winners.
The Nobel Prizes were established through the will of Alfred Nobel. He dedicated everything he earned from the invention of dynamite to the awards. Since 1901, with occasional interruptions, the prizes have recognized achievements in science, literature, and peace. Economics was added later. Physics was mentioned first in Nobel's will, perhaps reflecting the prominence of the field during his time. Today, the Nobel Prize in Physics is considered the most prestigious award in the field.
This honor in the field of physics has been awarded 118 times between 1901 and 2024. So far, 226 scientists have been awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics. This is the second award to be announced this year by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm. Just a day earlier, three scientists were announced as Nobel Prize winners for their contributions to the field of medicine. Last year, artificial intelligence pioneers John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for helping to lay the foundations of machine learning.
Mary E. Brunko, Fred Ramsdell, and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi were announced as winners of the Nobel Prize in Medicine on Monday. The winners in Chemistry will be announced on Wednesday and in Literature on Thursday. The Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on Friday, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics will be announced on October 13. The awards ceremony will be held on December 10, the anniversary of the death of its founder, Swedish industrialist and inventor of dynamite, Alfred Nobel, who died on this day in 1896.
